Civil War Cake, Secret Missions, & Life in General

Wow! Where is December going??

It has been far too long since we've posted anything. I am snuggling up with a cup of coffee, watching the snow fall outside, and I will try to get you caught up to date...

My grandfather has been in and out of the hospital a couple more times so far this month, and although his condition is currently "stable," one can never be sure. He is almost 90 years old, and we're beginning to realize that this may indeed be our last Christmas with him. We definitely appreciate your prayers!

In between the busy-ness related to my grandpa's health, and the ordinary holiday chaos, we have had the opportunity for a few little adventures.

December 7th was Rooster Boy's 10th birthday. He is a budding Civil War buff and has asked for a Civil war cake for the last few years. Honestly, I wasn't even sure where to start. So once again this year I was a bit beside myself for what sort of cake to do, when he came bursting into the room for the um-teenth time in his Union uniform...and "Duh!!" it hit me: I can just make a Civil War Kepi! (Kepi = the uniform hat)

I haven't done much with cakes since I shut down my little home cakery last July, so it was a real treat to pull out the tools and go for it.

Blowing out the candles - he & his brothers thought it was hilarious to "set the guy's hat on fire." Augh! Boys...

The birthday boy's dinner choice was Pizza Hut, which of course we all enjoyed. (I was relieved not to have had an involved entree requested for dinner, and to go out where someone else would have to clean up the mess. There is certainly a time and place for delegation!)

A friend of mine has suggested that I post something involving pictures of my previous cakes, since I've removed the cakery's website and facebook page. Assuming that I get a little bit of extra time, I might do so over the holiday. I know that I have always appreciated other cake decorator's photos online and have used some for inspiration (By the way, if anyone got photos of the wedding cake I did in July - I'd forgotten my camera and don't have any, so if you'd be willing to share I'd really appreciate it!!). We'll see how quickly I can get around to that.

As for life beyond birthdays, the boys have been preparing for the Children's Christmas Cantata at church, which we look forward to seeing.

We are also gearing up for a super secret project - code name: Operation Waterhole - which will be revealed to the boys upon the arrival of certain relatives over the holiday. One of the boys will definitely post on that once the mission is complete.

That's all for now. Hope you all have a safe and blessed evening!

  1. Thank you for the post and I will be using the cake my self and keep going with the homeschooling .
It seems as though your son is a history buff . Not sure would you allow our children to be pen pal over the computer?
The children at school are less then desirable and have left my son Jaeger with out any friends per say.

kinda funny I would be looking for a cake for a going on 10 year old and the same one you made.

  2. Thank you for your kind words. I hope your cake turns out well.
I'm sorry to say our son won't be able to email your son. Our sons are not allowed to personally correspond with people we haven't met personally - it's a family rule.

You might consider looking into homeschool groups in your local area that you can attend with your son. You are likely to meet other families with your same values that way, which would be an encouragement to you in your homeschooling and a way for your son to make more desirable friendships.
